Lace Wedding Gown

Here is the wedding dress I made last month on the lovely Mrs. Rachel Watkins Toone.  Best wishes to the new couple!

Alterations for JuliAn

I sure enjoyed working with this beautiful bride and her gorgeous dress! Installed new sleeves and a modesty panel that extended from the front, over the shoulder and around to the back.

Custom Wedding Dress

Dalys knew what she wanted when she showed up for her fitting. She had a binder with pictures, some swatches of fabric and a clear vision of what styles flattered her figure. There was only one problem: she had less than a month to her wedding date. Lucky for her I am a sucker for a beautiful wedding dress and clients with a clear vision of what they want. This past month has been a whirlwind of fittings and shopping and sewing and beading and pressing mixed in with my steady stream of regular projects.

Here's the time breakdown:

  • 4 hours of pattern making: I was unable to find a pre-made pattern that matched her design so I created one to her specifications. She wanted a two piece dress. The skirt needed a thick 2.5"-3" waistband and a tight fitted skirt to just below her hip. The bottom of the skirt needed to flare out and have a simple, smooth and short train of about 18". The top would be a hip length princess  seamed bodice with a square neck and cap sleeves covered in beaded lace overlay. The overlay would have a higher boat neck and 3/4 length sleeves and have scallop edge beaded trim all the way around. We decided to make the top so it could be worn tucked in or left out.
  • 3 hours of cutting out fabric: Yes, it takes that long to arrange the pattern pieces on the yardage and cut out the satin, lace and two layers of lining for a wedding dress.
  • 14 hours sewing. This includes basting, pressing, alterations after fittings, installing zippers and closures, linings and hemming.
  • 2.5 hours of fittings/consultations
  • 3 hours of handstitching-beading, buttons and finish work. Oh My!
This morning, after 26 hours of work spread out over the course of 3 weeks, I delivered Dalys' dress to her.

Bridal Alterations: Mari

Congratulations to Mari on your recent wedding! Thank you for asking me to help you with your alterations. To make the dress perfect we took in the side seams, fixed a pucker in the lace and did some work to the train and hem. Best Wishes to you!

Bridal Alterations for Stacey

I enjoyed working with the Beautiful Stacey to make her wedding dress perfect. We took in the side seams and darts, adjusted the sleeves, took up the hem and repaired a few small holes in the lace. While we were at it we decided to add a simple bustle to make dancing a bit easier. Congratulations Stacey and Best Wishes in your new life together!

Custom Temple Dress

Working on a custom Temple Dress for my friend Hailey. She wanted a white Hawaiian Print dress with a basic design. We had fun making sketches and discussing details. Can't wait for her final fitting tomorrow. Will post pictures here :-)

Custom Bridesmaid Dresses

I just finished four beautiful dresses for four beautiful sisters.  The Logan girls were getting ready to celebrate their brother's wedding in style wearing coral satin dresses. Though most of them were using the same fabric and the same style pattern all of them wanted their own spin on it.  Abby wanted a long dress with pleats and a tie. Liz wanted a calf length dress and 3/4 length sleeves. Eliza wanted a short dress with a big bow in the back. Hannah wanted a sheer band at the hem and a sheer tie at the waist.

We began talking about styles and making plans at the end of June. At our first appointment I took measurements and we discussed particulars. Our second meeting, the first fitting, was a few weeks later. Each girl tried on her unfinished dress so I could test out the fit and make sure everything was moving in the right direction.  There were a few adjustments that needed to be made and these were made note of at this time.

This week during the final fitting each girl tried on her finished dress to make sure it was perfect.  I taught them how to properly tie the bows so they wouldn't flop. We also talked about proper care and maintenance of a satin dress (DO NOT USE A HOT IRON!). At this final fitting we noticed a couple of simple adjustments were needed on one of the dresses.  I took that one dress home, made the changes--just a few stitches really--and returned the perfect dress a few hours later.

The one exception to all of the fittings was Abby. She lives in Utah so I was never able to meet with her personally.  She took her own measurements. When the dress was ready for the first fitting her brother took her the dress in Utah and she tried it on there. She took lots of pictures and marked it up with needed changes and we talked on the phone about what she wanted and needed. When the dress came back I made the changes, crossed my fingers and sent it back to Utah with her mom. We made sure it got there early enough to get it altered there if necessary. I am anxiously awaiting the report on that dress.

The wedding is this weekend and I've been promised pictures.  The girls looked fantastic at their final fitting so I can't wait to see them fully decked in their fancy shoes, jewelery and up-do's.

update: Here's the photos I downloaded from Facebook.  Thank you Logan's and I'm glad you had such a great time and felt so beautiful!

Online Ordered Wedding Dress Disaster Averted

This lovely bride thought her dreams were shattered when she opened the dress she ordered online from China.  The price was too good to resist but what she got was a dress that was too small through the hips.

Taking in a wedding dress that is too big is quite common; in fact most dresses that come to me for alterations come in  to have the side seams taken in.  Letting out a dress is a bit more complicated because you are limited by the amount of fabric in the side seams.

She needed more than 2 1/2 inches added into the hipline and surprisingly I was able to meet the challenge. We lucked out with the princess seaming and bigger than normal seam allowances. It is tight but it zips and she looks fabulous don't you think?! (and she just got home from work before this final fitting)
